(…) Om een figuratief schilderij te kunnen waarderen, erin mee te gaan, vragen we ons doorgaans af waar het licht vandaan komt. Dezelfde vraag wordt gesteld door astrofysici en religieuzen. Nu leidt iedere zoektocht naar oorsprong, zij het van licht, vorm of materie, onontkomelijk naar het oneindige. Hier voelt men de spoken van de metafysica opdoemen die zichzelf in het gesprek mengen, zonder te zijn opgeroepen… Wij weten dat als de materie eindig is (net zoals de snelheid van het licht), de praktische gevolgen van de oneindigheid van het universum de onvermijdelijke herhaling van werelden zijn. Alles bestaat, heeft bestaan en zal bestaan, en zo herhalen in bijzonder verre werelden deze schilderijen zich, sommige identiek en andere waarin de hemel groen is in plaats van blauw, waar de horizon verticaal is en niemand daarvan opkijkt, waar u het zelf bent die dit schilderij heeft geschilderd en Gijs Milius ernaar kijkt (…)

(…) Face à une peinture figurative, afin de l’apprécier, de se laisser avoir, on se demande généralement d’où vient la lumière. Cette question est aussi celle que se posent les astrophysiciens et les religieux. Or chaque interrogation sur l’origine, de la lumière comme de la forme ou de la matière, inévitablement, renvoie à l’infini.
L’on sent alors poindre les fantômes de la métaphysique s’invitant dans la conversation sans les avoir convoqués…vNous savons que si la matière est finie (comme la vitesse de la lumière), les conséquences pratiques de l’infinitude de l’univers sont l’inévitable répétition des mondes. Tout existe, a existé, existera, et ainsi dans des mondes particulièrement éloignés ces tableaux se répètent, certains identiques et d’autres où le ciel est vert plutôt que bleu, où l’horizon est vertical et cela n’étonne personne, où c’est vous-même qui avez peint ce tableau et Gijs Milius le regarde (…) Nicolas Bourthoumieux

(…) To appreciate a figurative painting, to allow oneself to be charmed, one generally questions where the light is coming from. Astrophysicists and religious thinkers ask themselves the same thing. Yet every inquiry into origins of light, form, or matter, unavoidably leads back to infinity. There come the ghosts of metaphysics without having been summoned… We know that if matter is finite (as is the speed of light), the practical consequence of the universe’s infinity is the inevitable repetition of worlds. Everything exists, has existed, will exist. Thus, in very distant worlds, these paintings are repeated: some identical, others with a sky that is green instead of blue, a vertical horizon, and no one is surprised — or worlds in which you painted this picture and Gijs Milius is the one looking at it (…) Nicolas Bourthoumieux
